Kotgarh, at 7500 feet is the apple basket of India situated 80 kilometres from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The area has a magnificent view of the snow-capped western Himalayas and the river Sutlej. It is the home of the Red Delicious and the Golden Delicious apple varieties.
A century ago, Satyananda Stokes, a young man from Philadelphia gave India its first apple orchards by introducing the Red and the Golden Delicious apples to farmers in the Shimla Hills in the western Himalayas. SInce then, the Kotgarh region is one of the most productive fruit growing belts in India. Farmers now grow various varieties of Cherry, Apricot, Plum and Apples.
